<![CDATA[Why Ground Penetrating Radars Work & How They Can Save You Thousands]]> https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/why-ground-penetrating-radars-work-and-how-they-can-save-you-thousands https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/why-ground-penetrating-radars-work-and-how-they-can-save-you-thousands Wed, 22 May 2019 00:00:00 GMT Highly cost-effective, non-disruptive and versatile, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) offers a prompt means of identifying underground objects. The advantages over a traditional, electromagnetic locator include GPR’s ability to see non-conductive materials such as plastic pipes and it accurately survey utilities buried up to eight metres deep.

Standard cable location tools may pick up ‘ghost readings’ caused by various environmental factors, such as high iron content, which may result in costly cable strikes. The GPR provides a comprehensive detection of obstacles underground, from Fibre Optic and HV cables to Streetlights, Drains and Culverts – meaning you can be safe in the knowledge that there will be zero utility strikes, ultimately saving you thousands.

How Does GPR Work?

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) locates underground objects by sending a signal into the ground, to then monitor the signal bounce back. Once the signal has been received, this is displayed on a screen for the operator to interpret, alternatively the data can be recorded for evaluation and processing later.

Instead of sending the signal through the air to look for objects, the GPR sends the signal into the ground to achieve the same objective. With traditional ‘CAT & Genny’ location tools, users are reliant on objects in the ground being metallic and having a detectable signal travelling along them. With GPR, as we are bouncing energy off objects, we are not restricted by the ability of the object to transmit a signal.

GPR has four basic components which combine to transmit a signal to bounce off objects.

Components of GPR

1. Transmit & receive unit

2. Control unit

3. Display unit

4. Power supply

The energy transmitted by GPR travels at different speeds through different substances in the ground. Radars measure the speed at which the signal returns and any changes in this speed are highlighted as some kind of change in the ground, these changes are represented as arches or ‘Hyperbolas’ on the GPR display. These ‘Hyperbolas’ deliver a 3D location of the targets we are looking for.

By using specialist software available with GPR, users can take the data and produce maps, depth slices and google earth images which can be geo-referenced with GPS. GPR has a very wide range of applications across many industries:

GPR has evolved over the past few years from a tool used by specialist companies and academics to a very user-friendly, effective and affordable resource for all.

In The field…

Our affiliate, Vp Equipment Specialists (ESS Safeforce, Brandon Hire Station, Groundforce, UK Forks and TPA), assisted a client on a pipeline project by providing an alternative method of ground surveying, making commercial savings and reducing downtime.

Employing standard cable location tools to survey the ground, the project was greatly delayed owing to various environmental factors. The high levels of iron content in the ground caused misleading ghost readings, which could potentially lead to workers inadvertently striking underground utilities such as high voltage (HV) cables at a potential cost of £10,000 and could be detrimental to a companies’ reputation, so an alternative solution was absolutely necessary. Following a HV cable near-miss review, a discussion with Vp plc took place to deliberate on alternative methods of ground surveying – ESS Safeforce stepped up to the challenge and introduced the GPR system as a potential solution.

ESS Safeforce provided the GPR system with an on-site familiarisation by our technical support, the company were then able to take the opportunity to train the relevant personnel for it to be successfully utilised on the pipeline. Three months into the project, the cost-effective GPR employment had effectively proven itself, avoiding ghost readings, detrimental obstacles and utility strikes.

Final words from the site manager:

‘The GPR is a great innovation and a proactive approach to preventing further damage that is giving site workers confidence on the job. It should’ve been rolled out years ago.’

Take your survey project to the next level; detect more and detect fast with our range of affordable Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, engineered to deliver a step change in capabilities with minimal change in work practices or training requirements.

<![CDATA[Too many workers on the job? Consider the benefits of upgrading to a One-Person Total Station]]> https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/too-many-workers-on-the-job-consider-the-benefits-of-upgrading-to-a-one-person-total-station https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/too-many-workers-on-the-job-consider-the-benefits-of-upgrading-to-a-one-person-total-station Wed, 06 Mar 2019 00:00:00 GMT Total Stations have become the pinnacle instrument for every surveyance or construction project. These multipurpose surveying instruments outweigh the pros of a traditional Theodolite, surpassing measurement capabilities based on Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM). They can measure distance, angles and elevation with a high level of precision, with the only downfall being the price and level of training required. Nevertheless, in recent years Total Stations have become far more accessible to the general market, with the cost of ownership and user-friendly convenience improving with the advancement of technology. So how does it get any better for a Total Station? The answer is robotic.

With a standard Total Station, such as the Leica Flexline series, two operators are required to work the machine – with one person at the instrument and one person looking with a prism. While this traditional way of working is reliable, Leica Robotic Total Stations running Captivate allow extensive functionality including image capture and link to points, coding and line work, DXF import and export and CAD backcloths. This allows the user to have all the information at their fingertips and a toolbox for collating data – hence the need for only one operator at a time.

Cutting-edge Robotic Total Stations deliver significant advantages over their predecessors. Users will immediately notice the benefits of upgrading to one owing to a number of factors.

 • Remote operation. Gone are the days of two-person jobs. Operators can be situated where the work is located instead of at the instrument, helping to prevent any mistakes. This means users can quickly perform far more calculations and inspections in less time – increasing profit and productivity.
 • Increased output. On average, you are able to survey and set out four times the amount of points with a Robotic Total Station.
 • Higher quality. The substantial increase in productivity results in increased inspection points, thus accommodating for better quality calculations and less rework.
 • Solid investment. Users may be paying more initially, but the investment of a Robotic Total Station far exceeds the price tag. A higher productivity, with high quality results, cost saving on labour and little rework means greater satisfaction from the customer, an outstanding reputation and more projects under the belt. A Robotic Total Station soon pays for itself.

When it comes to surveying instruments, set your sights high with a Robotic Total Station. They are supreme in terms of data processing, precision and reliability – no longer are results hindered at the mercy of human error. The only decision one has to consider now, is of course, which Robotic Total Station is right for you? Below are some of our best total stations we have to offer:

<![CDATA[The Importance of Fall Protection - Staying Safe this Winter]]> https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/the-importance-of-fall-protection-staying-safe-this-winter https://www.zenithsurvey.co.uk/blog/post/the-importance-of-fall-protection-staying-safe-this-winter Mon, 11 Feb 2019 00:00:00 GMT Fall protection is an imperative priority on every project that requires Working at Height, however, cold weather and icy conditions increase the risks of falls and injuries – here’s our quick guide for staying safe this winter!

Working on-site can be an extremely dangerous job, with high safety risks surrounding both you and individuals around you. When Working at Height or in hard-to-reach Confined Spaces, the safety risks soar – especially in cold, icy conditions. Safety improves quality, so it is essential that every worker has a thorough knowledge of the Health & Safety procedures and uses the correct equipment for personnel to carry out the task efficiently and safely.

At Zenith Survey, our specialist team can advise you on the correct procedures when working in these hazardous conditions on 07534 800 734, alternatively, take a look below at our quick guide to fall protection!

Harnesses & Lanyards – the first line of defence

Dangers surrounding Working at Heights are one of the biggest causes of personal injuries and fatal accidents in the workplace, as a result safety harnesses and lanyards are fundamental to an operative’s well-being.

One of the most important factors to consider when selecting your harness is picking one that is specifically designed for the operation. Wearing the wrong harness could result in injury – or in the worst case scenario, a fatality. Users need to observe their surroundings and work environment, choose a harness that is suitable for their industry and ensure that the equipment is in good working condition.

Is the user working on scaffolding?

Maybe the work involves powered access platforms or going down into hard-to-reach Confined Spaces? Differing harnesses and lanyards suit varying applications. When working on scaffolding or on a roof, it is imperative to include a harness and lanyard that comes with a large double action snap hook – providing increased strength and durability should a user fall. With powered access platforms, a work restraint system should be in place. A full body harness and restraint lanyard will limit movement, allowing for increased balance and stability whilst on the machine. In a Confined Space, visibility can become an issue. When sight is restricted, there is an immense increase to the risk of falling or slipping; selecting a harness with reflective yarn woven into the webbing will extend the line of sight and help create a safer work environment.

Another crucial step in determining the right harness is identifying the wearer. Most harnesses are universal in size, however, should a wearer be quite small in stature, a harness that is easily adjustable and lightweight would best suit their requirements.

Attachment points on a harness must be considered. The five attachment points on a harness are on the back, chest, two on the hip and one on the abdomen. The number of attachment points you require depends on the job you’re working on, different attachment points have their own benefits – workers can opt for one or two attachments for freedom of movement or four or five for working at an angle or attaching a descender device.

Comfort should also be a factor when working, padding and webbing allows for ease and dexterity on the job – so wearer’s won’t feel restricted and can concentrate on their work with content, which in turn lowers the risk of one rushing on a job and possibly falling as a result.

To hire from our comprehensive Harness and Lanyard range, or for more information click here.

Working at Heights & Confined Space Training – tackle the winter months with skill

Working at Height and in Confined Spaces exposes an individual to a range of potential hazards, some of which result in fatalities. Having the right skills and knowledge to avoid accidental falls and injuries are beneficial for every worker, that’s why there’s a range of training courses to suit different work environments.

Our affiliate ESS Safeforce is able to tailor their Working at Height training courses to a particular industry or working method and will provide the essential skills and knowledge needed to manage Work at Height Operatives, operate a Safe System of Work or to effect a safe and swift evacuation or rescue. Effective lighting is paramount for safe working practices and project efficiency, we are dedicated to offering not only quality equipment for minor works, but also full support in large volume applications like major projects at refineries, chemical plants and power stations.

Here is a handy guide for our eagerly anticipated lighting range.

Revamp your gear with our Handlamps & Torches

When working in areas such as confined spaces or industrial sites, efficient and up-to-date equipment is a must. Lighting the way to better equipment is our range of handlamps and torches, ATEX approved, high strength and robust portable lights that are imperative aids in low-visibility areas. But which torch do you need for your project?

The Wolf ATEX LED HT-650 Zone 0 Headtorch is the ideal high light output and long duration headtorch for hands free lighting, particularly where access is difficult and requires climbing or crawling. With a 'Fitted for Life' high power LED light source, the HT-650 has a powerful light output of up to 130 lumens with an optimum light duration of approximately 17 hours from a set of three AA alkaline cells. The use of primary cells makes it economical for personal lighting.

The HT-650 is CE marked to the ATEX Directive and IECEx certified for safe use in Zones 0, 1 and 2 potentially explosive gas and Zones 20, 21 and 22 dust atmospheres. The tilt adjustment mechanism allows the user to angle the light and the bespoke optics deliver a broad spot beam suitable for close up hands free tasks, ensuring that this handy headtorch is perfect for any project that requires complete focus.

The Right Angled ATEX Safety Torch is a reliable, simple and cost-effective portable light, available with a straight or right-angle body style and vacuum or xenon bulbs.

This compact torch has a certified IP67 enclosure, ensuring it is securely sealed, dust tight and protected from water immersion. Owing to the torch’s carefully selected thermoplastic resins, it offers high strength with excellent chemical resistance and proven impact resistance – even at sub-zero temperatures! The rubber armoured lens ring and end cap give enhanced grip and shock protection, in addition the lens is scratch and chemical resistant, making this the ultimate tough companion in low visibility areas.

The T4 model delivers outstanding light output using advanced, long life xenon bulbs, set in a high quality parabolic reflector, coupled with alkaline cell approval, giving up to 12 hours of light output. Alternatively, the T6 model allows use in any Zone 1 or 2 atmospheres, with optimum light output in this temperature class and a 5 hour duration. Both models allow safe use in Zones 21 and 22 dust atmospheres, with certified maximum surface temperatures of 65°C or 95°C.

The ATEX Rechargeable LED Handlamp from Wolf is a high performance, lightweight and compact handlamp for safe use in Zone 1 (Gas) and Zone 21 (Dust). Its high powered LED light delivers a piercing beam that floods through the darkness, giving a peak of 200 lumens light output.

This first-rate handlamp is lithium ion battery powered with 6 hours duration at full power and 12 hours at half power and comes supplied with a standard 230V charging cradle (non ATEX), which gives a maximum 3.5 hour recharge time. Its long battery life ensures project efficiency allowing personnel to focus on the job at hand without worrying about loss of visibility.

Shedding Light on our Floodlamp Range

Our intrinsically safe Floodlamps and Worklights are designed for use in hazardous areas to remove the risk of sparking that may cause explosions or fires in flammable conditions. These challenging environments need capable lighting that is CE marked to comply with applicable ATEX directives, as well as being water and dust tight. Take a look below to discover which lighting equipment is the ideal solution for your project.

The 10w Portable LED Worklight is compact, reliable and delivers an excellent performance. Ideal for providing scene and work lighting without the need to provide a separate power source. Scene lighting can be set up in seconds by a range of end users such as builders, surveyors and tradesmen.

This robust worklight comes with attachment clips that are quick and easy to affix to tripods, making it perfect for use in confined spaces.

The Portable LED Worklight comes in both 10w and 20w editions, delivering an outstanding performance at a budget. These tough worklights provide cost-effective lighting for virtually all work sites and are particularly useful in harsh, remote applications for extended periods.

The Rechargeable LED Single Head Floodlight – Peli is Network Rail approved and easily deployed to deliver high intensity lighting without a separate power source. This powerful floodlight even won ‘Highly Commended’ in the Network Rail Innovations Award, so users can be rest assured of its quality!

The floodlight suits remote environments where power is not available or noise sensitive environments like urban night working where a generator will disturb residents. It also reduces the risk of manual handling and avoids the trip hazards from trailing power leads. With a high-powered light output of 1000 lumens (economy) or 2000 lumens (high) through 24 high magnitude LEDs and a long battery duration, projects won’t suffer from lack of lighting and the job can be completed with speed and efficiency, whatever the time of day.

The Dialight ATEX LED Floodlamp is suitable for use in Zone 1 and is capable of being linked together as a group. The light is rugged in design and has an Ingress Protection rating of IP67, ensuring it is protected from dust and water.

This Dialight Floodlamp has an incredible light output of 2250 Lumens and comes supplied with a standard 10m input cable with an EX rated plug and coupler, providing plenty of light without loss of performance.

The ATEX LED Floodlamp from Wolf is a high performance, lightweight and portable floodlight for safe use in Zone 1 (Gas) and Zone 21 (Dust). It has 110 and 230 available voltages depending on your requirements, with a strong light output of 58w.

This floodlight is supplied as standard with a 20m supply cable, giving plenty of scope to manoeuvre the light around the work area. With an Ingress Protection rating of IP67, it will provide competent lighting with extreme protection.

The ATEX High Output LED Zone 1 Floodlamp is portable and designed for lighting large areas with a clear white light. It boasts longstanding protection against the elements in the harshest environments with its IP66 Ingress Protection rating, and is approved for ATEX Zones 1 and 21 and ATEX Zones 2 and 22.

These extremely bright floodlamps are capable of being linked together, and with its 9500 lumen light output, vast work areas will always be covered with high intensity lighting.

The Wolf ATEX Zone 0 Floodbank System exploits the excellent performance and reliability of the Wolflite XT Rechargeable Zone 0 Handlamps to deliver collectively a flood of outstanding illumination of up to 2,100 lumens to a Zone 0 hazardous task area.

Available in two, four or six handlamp bank configurations, the stands can be placed on level ground or mounted on a tripod (available separately) to elevate, direct and focus the light to the desired working area. The bespoke optics coupled with the highest performance 'Fitted for Life' ultra-bright LED light sources deliver an outstanding light output. With spot and flood switchable beam options, a built-in state of charge indication for each lamp and up to 6 hours (full power) or 12 hours (power save) duration, these robust floodbank systems are sure to deliver the ultimate performance on a variety of work sites.
